CQ DTH has grown from a high-class niche
service to a service for the masses. It has grown tremendously in India
expecting to be bigger than USA in 2012?
RC Comparing the DTH Operations here with rest of the world,
I find the main difference in the ARPU's, which in India is well below
the western world at around 3.5 $ vs 40-60 $ in the developed
economies. On the positive side, this may also mean we have plenty of
headroom to grow.
CQ With 6 players already in the market it
will be difficult for any new entrant to establish themselves. Pricing
is the key for penetration increase.
RC We do have a problem of transponder shortage but it may
not be possible or necessary to carry all channels, transponder
capacity will grow in the future.
There is a push for digitalising Cable TV but in spite of its higher
bandwidth availability digital cable is unlikely to be a major threat
to DTH due to geographic reach and limitations.
Advertising, product development distribution reach and promotion are
all ingredients that will help greater penetration, subsidies, will
continue to be a reality for the foreseeable future.
Dish TV has always been the pioneer in both product innovation and
technology, we expect to continue to maintain our leadership stance
with new products and services.
CQ Is Interoperability still a major issue in
DTH? If so, what measures are being taken by the industry?
RC Interoperability is a major issue in the industry but
Dish TV is fully compliant , however some other major platforms are
not, we hope the govt will push for this important mandatory feature to
be delivered as envisaged in the licensing agreements.
